Challenge Your Balance: My Daily 2×4 Walking Routine

Balance, coordination and space orientation are getting more difficult and challenging as we age. It’s why my fitness journey includes activities to practice and challenge my balance: trampoline rebounding, stand up paddling, inline skating, onewheel floating and simple exercises in my backyard like one leg stand.

One activity that I practice daily is 2×4 lumber walking. It’s a simple exercise that involves walking on a narrow board, but it can be surprisingly effective in improving your balance and spatial awareness. My 2×4 lumber is old, twisty and wobbly providing an extra challenge. If you’re interested in seeing how I incorporate this exercise into my daily routine, check out my recent YouTube video.

Yoga is another low-impact activity that can help improve balance, flexibility, and strength. There are many different yoga poses that can challenge your balance, such as the tree pose or the warrior III pose. I am practicing a couple of yoga poses. As a paddler I like Yoga for paddling book by Anna Levesque. I am going to try some SUP yoga when water gets warmer.

You can find many fitness books oriented for seniors on Amazon including balance exercises:

Remember, preserving your balance is key to maintaining good health as you age. So whether you’re trying out new activities or practicing simple exercises at home, make sure to prioritize your balance and coordination.
