Over the decades, I’ve paddled thousands of miles, raced hundreds of hours, and experimented with everything from kayaks and canoes to stand-up paddleboards and rowing shells. But lately, a new perspective has emerged – one that inspired my latest video: “My Best Is Enough.”
This short film combines quotes drawn from personal experience with footage of my favorite ways to stay active:
- Solo paddling and rowing on northern Colorado lakes
- E-bike cruising on scenic trails around Fort Collins, Lovalnd and Windsor
- Simple but effective backyard workouts with kettlebells, mini trampoline, stairs, and clubs
At its core, the message is simple: you don’t have to be perfect to keep moving forward. As we age, our best may look different, but it still matters. Progress isn’t always faster – it’s sometimes quieter, deeper, and more personal.
I created this video not just as a reminder to myself, but as encouragement for anyone who may be struggling with comparison, self-doubt, or pressure to perform. Especially for aging athletes or lifelong movers, it’s easy to fall into the trap of chasing who we used to be. But this journey – right now – is still worth showing up for.
“My best isn’t perfect. It’s honest, earned, and evolving.”
That said… watching the finished video, I realized it may come off a little too dramatic. Let’s not forget – having fun is just as important. Joy, freedom, play – that’s what drew me to paddling in the first place. That’s what keeps me coming back to the water, the bike, the trail, and even the backyard.
So yes, honor your effort. Trust your growth. But also – enjoy the ride.
